"A community is a collection of common things"

Common things was commissioned by the University of Michigan as part of a week long series of events surrounding the Martin Luther King holiday. The theme of the conference was “Building Community”.

The full title: “Common Things: a community is a collection of common things” placed emphasis on the communality of mankind through the metaphor of objects we have in common.

Students participated in the work, bringing a “common thing”, creating images and sounds associated with their chosen object. Two of the grid panels contained computer interfaced sensors that detected a viewer stepping on the panel center. One panel triggered sounds and the other images that are projected.

This collaborative work has been constructed with students at the University of Michigan and Albion College.
